Changing Channels Photograms bring together processes from my cold shop studio to the darkroom. These ideas share the same essential question: what happens when an image is made, not taken?
Each of these works emerges inside the chemical infused, red lit darkroom. The negative of a Precious Beast photograph is exposed, captured inside a cardboard frame on Ilford paper. The cardboard stencil has been carefully cut up to allow multiple exposures, building the image in layers. Some layers and exposures contain shadows of flowers, twigs and even drops of water. After several exposures and rearrangements the blank white paper is laid into the developer. This is the moment when the silver-oxide reacts and reveals itself. There are no corrections. Only decisions.
I then digitally refine the images before having them printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta — one of the finest archival papers available for photographic work.
