House on the Hill
(2025)
Hand carved, cut and polished optical crystal, steel, quartzite
Size: H:36 W:25 D:13cm
House on the Hill is an symbolic interpretation of the house my father built, on Spioenkop. We still live here today.
The fragile crystal house, lovingly faceted and textured, perches precariously on top of a stone found on our land.
This sculpture speaks to my love for our home, but also of the fragility of ownership.
In July 2022 the City of Tshwane served us with an expropriation order which unleashed an emotional tremor. For three years we fought the expropriation as the state was unwilling to negotiate. We won the case, keeping our home. This sculpture was created during this time.
