Artefacts at the Pretoria Art Museum
26 July – 31 august 2025
Artefacts is a collaborative exhibition showing works by Lothar Böttcher and Caitlin Greenberg.
Location: Pretoria Art Museum
Cnr Francis Baard and Wessels Street, Arcadia Park, Arcadia
Opening: Saturday 26 July 2025
The exhibition can be viewed till the 31st of August 2025
Entrance fee: R30
Both artists are known for their passion and specialised use of glass in their oeuvre. This exhibition does not specifically explore materiality and craft but rather investigates a spectrum of social narratives. Both artists examine inner voices, expressing personal dilemmas and philosophies, that invite visitors to experience the space through a fourth dimension – one shaped by memory, emotion and embodied presence.
Böttcher frames his “Artefacts” around mass media and perceptions, contemplating consumption and curated propaganda. Appropriating material, both physical and conceptual, he weaves phenomenological interactions into visually theatrical tapestries. This Is Not A TV – a hand carved optical lens perched on an air cylinder’s thrashing tube – gives a surrealistic view of the world. One perspective bends and distorts the framed words of Richard Serra and Carlota Fey Schoolman’s Television Delivers People (1973) suspended on the opposite wall.
Plato’s allegory also makes an appearance in The Cave… under the watchful reflection of a starburst altar piece titled Dosis Sola Facit Venenum, translated as “The Doses Make The Poison” (Paracelsus).
Greenberg’s “Artefacts” unfold into expansive installations that investigate silence, memory and the quiet endurance of emotional labour. Through blown glass, sound, stitching and found objects, she reflects on the overlooked narratives of women – those rendered invisible, forgotten or erased.
Themes of inherited identity, privilege and fear are explored through fragile yet resilient forms.
Stitching functions both as a gesture of repair and concealment, while the bed recurs as a space of both refuge and exposure. Positioning herself as a mediator and witness, Greenberg invites viewers into the spaces between what is spoken and what is suppressed – into the intimate echoes of stories society often refuses to hear.
Artefacts opens on Saturday, 26 July 2025, at 11:00 at the Pretoria Art Museum and can be viewed until Sunday, 31 August 2025.

Mollified Venice presents: Fluid Matter – Humanature
14 July – 8 August 2025
From July 14 to August 8, 2025 SPARC*-Spazio Arte Contemporanea is hosting the Fluid Matter project, which after a first exhibition in 2024 on the occasion of The Venice Glass Week, returns to present a new group show of artists who use glass as a common medium of expression.
The curatorial team, this time composed of Dario Dalla Lana, Francesca Giubilei, Cosima Montavoci and Lorenzo Passi, decided to focus on the relationship between man and nature, between physical and digital reality, between society and the environment, identifying glass as that symbolic medium, capable of reflecting and deforming our perceptions.

- Pinhole Camera
- Bottle Lens Image
Synopsis:
Combining glass and light has been part of my oeuvre for a long time.
During the madness of lockdown in the Covid years I started exploring analogue photographic processes through which I focused on pinhole photography.
As a cold-worker I have always been intrigued by the optics of glass, and my adventures with this primitive pinhole photographic style inspired a way to combine both of my loves.
Various “lenses” that slide into the cardboard chamber of the camera were made. Each lens is different.
For this exhibition I am showing the “Bottle Lens” and resulting image. I used a coke bottle, cut and mounted on sheet glass as a filter between the tiny aperture and photographic paper.
The results are quite exciting and mostly unpredictable.
This work can be seen as comment on our oversaturated, digital lives.
I love this meditative process of making images — from cutting and preparing the lenses, to loading the camera (I can only take one image at a time), going out and setup, opening the shutter (for ca. 6 minutes), returning to the darkroom and develop the image. So much can happen during this time and each result is an exciting surprise.

Simon Gate’s famous Bacchus Bowl or Kosta’s famous crystal Tsar’s Bowl could not be made today. There are very few knowledge carriers and some of the equipment is only preserved in archives. At the tip of the wheel aims to uplift these at-risk techniques, through a blended historical and contemporary exhibition, and complemented with workshops and demos.
Taking over Open, our cavernous exhibition space in the old blowing hall, works from 17 contemporary glass cutters and engravers will sit side-by-side with historic works from our collection. A wide range of engraving techniques will be displayed, from extreme deep cutting to delicate copper wheel engraving.
At the center of the exhibition we will establish a working cutting shop with historical machines and traditional cutting disks. Visitors will be able to see both historical and contemporary examples of cut and engraved glass, while getting a deeper understanding of the techniques and knowledge behind each line.

My most recent series of sculptures titled ‘This is not a TV’, revisits themes of mass media, juxtaposing analogue against digital phenomena. I am literally questioning personal observations on how we experiencing the world around us through these sculptures, especially as I believe we live in an age of surveillance.
“This is not a TV”’s title references René Magritte’s painting “The Treachery of Images” also known as “This is not a pipe”. I love the surreal nature where words and iconography clash, questioning the relationship between the image and reality. I find this particularly important in our current age, where days are filled with endless reams of fleeting images…

On the occasion of the Berlin edition of the international Glass Art Society conference, the group exhibition, “Under the skin” is taking place in the spaces of KA 32 Gallery.
The show is a dialogue between international glass artists and artists residing in Berlin that come from other disciplines, who have been invited to experiment with glass, specifically for this event.
The common thread is research, the need to look beneath the surface shaping narrative devices able to provide critical point of views. The exchange of technical experiences stimulates a conversation among the artists with the goal of creating new perspectives through art and new points of view (other than those established) to examine the world we live in.
